Bail rejected to BD Foods boss

Court Correspondent

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected the bail petition for BD Foods Chairman Badruddoza Chowdhury Momen, arrested on charge of smuggling heroin to the United Kingdom.

Judge Mohammad Momin Ullah of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order following a criminal appeal by the defence lawyers against the rejection of bail of the lower court.

Badruddoza was arrested on May 14 after Nazmul Haider Bulbul, a former BD Foods official, and his accomplice Mokhlesur Rahman Nayan, a cargo handler, confessed to a magistrate that they smuggled 22.5kg heroin to the UK at Badruddoza's directives. Later, he was placed on a 12-day remand in two phases.

Earlier on May 22, the defence lawyers had filed a criminal appeal to the Sessions Court seeking ad interim bail. But the court, rejecting the ad interim bail, had fixed yesterday for hearing on the issue with the lower court records.

Meantime, Badruddoza was shown arrested in another drug smuggling case and placed on a seven-day remand on May 29 for further interrogation. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is interrogating Badruddoza.
