Heroin Smuggling: BD Foods boss remanded again

Court Correspondent

BD Foods Chairman Badruddoza Chowdhury Momen, arrested on charge of smuggling heroin to the UK, was shown arrested in another drug smuggling case and remanded yesterday for further interrogation.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shamsul Alam granted a seven-day remand against a 10-day remand prayer in connection with the 54kg heroin smuggling case filed with Sutrapur Police Station.

Badruddoza was arrested on May 14 after Nazmul Haider Bulbul, a former BD Foods official, and his accomplice Mokhlesur Rahman Nayan, a cargo handler, confessed to a magistrate that they smuggled 22.5kg heroin to the UK at Badruddoza's directive.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police produced Badruddoza before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court, Dhaka yesterday afternoon on completion of his five-day remand in connection with the 22.5kg heroin smuggling case filed with Motijheel Police Station.

In his forwarding report, the investigation officer (IO) CID Inspector Nurul Islam said that Badruddoza admitted to have smuggled illegal goods to the UK by hiding those inside the legitimate exported goods, although he denied smuggling heroin.

Moreover, the IO seized evidence on draft accounts of huge amount of money and some returned cheques from his house and BD Foods office.

So, Badruddoza needs to be kept in the jail until the investigation completes, the IO added.

CID Inspector Abdur Razzak, the IO of the 54kg heroin smuggling case filed with Sutrapur Police Station, submitted a petition for showing Badruddoza arrested in the case and prayed a 10-day remand for interrogation.

In his forwarding report, the IO mentioned that Badruddoza was the mastermind behind smuggling heroin. Moreover, two arrestees had earlier given confessional statements and mentioned Badruddoza as their chief.

So, Badruddoza needs to be quizzed further to find out vital clues about smuggling drugs, whereabouts of his business partners and names of his foreign buyers, the IO added.

REMAND OF MAINUDDIN
BD Foods Limited manager Mohammad Mainuddin, arrested on the same charge, was placed on a three-day remand to find out more information about smuggling drugs to the UK.

The IO produced Mainuddin before the same court on completion of his five-day remand yesterday and sought for a fresh seven-day remand.

Kazi Zafar Reza, proprietor of Rainbow Enterprise, and Abul Bashar, owner of Green Haven Enterprise had earlier given confessional statements about drug smuggling to a magistrate at different dates.
