The examination controller of Rajshahi University (RU) has asked the chairman of geology and mining department to provide information about class attendance by Mahbub Alam Salehi, a key suspect in teacher S Taher Ahmed murder case.
The master's examination form of Salehi, president of RU Islami Chhatra Shibir, did not have the information about his class attendance.
Examination Controller Prof Anwar Hossain sent back the form along with a letter to the department chairman on Thursday, asking him to fill in the box against the class attendance and submit an explanation by today.
Prof Anwar told newsmen that it is mandatory to fill in the box against class attendance by a student, but it was left blank.
Geology department Chairman Prof Syed Shamsuddin Ahmed said he has received the letter from the examination controller.
A teacher of the department said that as per university rules, a student who did not attend 75 percent of classes can be barred from sitting for the exams.
And those students who attended 50 percent of classes can be allowed to fill in exam forms with a fine. The rule is strictly followed in science, commerce and social science faculties.
Although Salehi attended only one percent of classes, he was allowed to sit for the examination, the teacher added.
Meanwhile, Progressive Teachers' Association of RU, Bangladesh Chhatra League and other left-leaning students' organisations have demanded resignation of the vice-chancellor as he allowed Salehi to take his exams.
